Ed Tech + New Media

There is much to consider when it comes to deciding on using technology to support teaching and learning. Equally as much when wanting to leverage New Media in a meaningful to improve the student experience, or to find more compelling approaches to inform students of a topic or area.

WCLA can provide guidance and support in either developing ideas for multimedia-based resources to support your teaching and learning, or even collaborating from start to finish through the entire production process.

The resources on this page focus on digital media creation and the meaningful use of digital technologies to support teaching and learning. Topics covered include the creation of resources incorporating video, audio, animations, and extended reality (XR) [more commonly known as Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR / VR)]. While studio or on-location filming is ideal, we also explore solutions for creating video-based content when those resources may not be available, or when time constraints make this infeasible.

A comparison of Video Types

There are many tools and programs available to support the creation of video-based media. The question is always which will best meet the intended purpose - and which is the easiest or most convenient to get the job done.

One of the things that can help with this decision is seeing the final output of each program or tool. This playlist may help you decide which video style or quality will be best suited given your subject requirements and video need.

Creating videos in your own space has many advantages: It's usually more accessible, and negates having to book or travel somewhere special. Related to this is the comfort of working in your own environment - which means that you can focus on the content creation, rather than trying to understand a foreign space, or the tools within.

However, there are many products on the market, and when one wants to start creating videos in their own space, it can be difficult to determine which product will work best given budget constraints and space limitations.

To assist with this, Kris has gone through equipment he has, and others that has borrowed, to demonstrate typical setups and how they will affect any final product.

There are many ways and places one can create videos; a studio is ideal, but not always feasible or accessible. Thus, it's important to be able to create appropriate videos that are high quality and support teaching or learning objectives with relative ease.

In this series of videos, Kris will go through showing key features of different tools and the techniques or potential processes to create high quality videos that you can share with students to support their learning. The videos take a 'gradiated' approach, going from the most accessible, and easiest tools to more complicated. As additional tools are made available, new videos will be added to this playlist.
