Tutor Development Program

The FBE Tutor Development Program supports and develops new tutors by equipping them with the
necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to be effective educators. The program is designed for
tutors new to the faculty and aims to:

  • Help develop knowledge of effective teaching and learning in higher education contexts;
  • Provide individualised feedback on their teaching to support their development as a tutor;
  • Equip tutors with practical skills on how to enhance student learning within and outside of the
    classroom; and
  • Provide a forum for new tutors to share their experiences and gain insights from experienced
    educators.

  • The first seminar in the Tutor Development program explores the foundations of effective teaching in higher education and provides an overview of tutoring in FBE. The session aims to build your confidence as a tutor, and will focus on creating a classroom environment that facilitates learning and belonging. To do this, we will provide practical advice on preparing for the semester, introduce activities such as ice breakers that you can use during your first tutorials, and provide opportunities for you to connect with tutor colleagues.

  • In the second seminar in the Tutor Development program, we explore teaching approaches that actively engage students in their learning. In doing this, we will unpack how active learning is understood in the literature and how teaching techniques might differ between disciplines. This session will showcase some of the approaches taken by experienced tutors in the faculty, and will provide opportunities for you to develop your own strategies in groups.

  • The third seminar in the Tutor Development program focuses on developing your capacity to provide constructive feedback in the classroom and on assessment that fosters student learning. To do this, we will explore what the literature says about the principles and practices of effective feedback, and examine approaches to applying these in your own teaching.

  • The Peer Mentor program compliments the Tutor Development seminars, leveraging the pedagogical knowledge and experience within the faculty to support and develop our new educators. This opportunity will be open to new teaching staff (mentees) who will be paired with an experienced mentor to develop a teaching plan and receive constructive feedback from observations of teaching. In addition, experienced tutors in Education-focused positions are invited to express their interest in being a mentor, with the mentoring contributing to the service component of their role.
