Discover the ways in which Melbourne Institute researchers are using data visualisations and services to investigate the big issues facing Australians today.
The problem
The complex social and economic issues Australia faces demand rigorous, meaningful analysis of high-quality data. Research insights then need to be effectively communicated to policymakers and the community.
The research
The Melbourne Institute has active research interests in survey design and methodology, interactive data visualisation, data management, and generative AI and machine learning. Researchers are contributing to various projects across the Melbourne Institute and University through the development of data, tools, and secure platforms. The institute also offers data services through the Melbourne Institute Data Lab (MIDL), a secure virtual data environment, which allows researchers to use sensitive data for deeper analyses into issues affecting Australians.
The impact
Our research has underpinned the well-known Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, which has informed public and policy discourse on personal and household economic wellbeing since 2001. Our data visualisations (such as the Breaking Down Barriers Community Profiles) are helping to better engage the community. Through its accreditation under the national Data Availability and Transparency Scheme, the lab supports the university’s academics to better engage with data providers in Australian Government, the private sector and other research institutions.
