Collaborative AI Lab in Business & Economic Research (CALIBER)

Collaborative AI Lab in Business & Economic Research (CALIBER)

Advancing AI-powered research, developing bespoke agentic solutions, and building cutting-edge infrastructure to support innovation across economics, business, and data science.

CALIBER brings together researchers across economics, business and the social sciences to design and apply cutting‑edge AI for research, policy and public benefit. As data and analytical tools grow in scale and complexity, there is an urgent need for AI systems that are innovative, reliable, transparent and responsible. CALIBER’s mission is to push the frontier of AI‑enabled social science by building bespoke tools, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and partnering with government and industry to address real‑world challenges. By combining methodological innovation with a commitment to responsible data use, the lab aims to accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen the role of robust evidence in policy and decision‑making.

Our areas of focus

Build interdisciplinary collaboration in AI and the social sciences

Bring together scholars from economics, business, data science and related fields to create new methods and applications at the intersection of AI and social science.

Develop AI tools for research and policy analysis

Design and deploy bespoke AI systems to support data analysis, literature synthesis, reproducibility and large scale empirical research.

Create research infrastructure for next generation analytics

Develop and maintain computing infrastructure and shared resources that enable researchers to train and deploy advanced AI models safely and efficiently.

Partner with government, industry and non profits

Collaborate with external organisations to develop practical AI solutions for complex policy and data challenges while promoting responsible and transparent AI use.

Initiatives and scope

CALIBER activities span methodological research, tool and platform development, reproducibility and governance work, and applied projects that translate research into policy and operational outcomes.

We work across a range of projects and partnerships, including in collaboration with:

  • Paul Ramsay Foundation
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
