From Discovery to Dream Job: How the Career Discovery Immersion Opened the Door to BlueRock
By Sammi Zhao
During my final semester of the Master of Management (Accounting), I participated in the Career Discovery Immersion. This program connected me with my future team at BlueRock and turned my career aspirations into a reality.
I was drawn to the Career Discovery Immersion because of its potential to offer real-world insights and professional connections. The program’s industry visits also allowed me to explore the working environment first-hand.
The Career Discovery Immersion consists of Career Conversation Panels and Industry Insight Visits. During the panels, I heard from industry experts who shared their personal experiences and career paths. The visit to BlueRock helped me understand the company's culture and establish meaningful connections with the team. I was inspired by how much BlueRock’s values aligned with my own goals.
Before the visit, I had explored BlueRock’s website and was struck by their philosophy: “Do things you love with people you care about and good things happen.” The moment I stepped into the office, I felt something special. The space was buzzing with energy, innovation and inclusivity. When speaking to the team, it was clear that they were not only passionate about their work but also dedicated to collaboration and continuous innovation. I was particularly impressed by their in-house AI solutions, designed to meet client needs while protecting sensitive data.
The visit helped sharpen my employability skills. The team provided valuable advice on resume preparation and submission strategies, highlighting the key skills they look for in candidates. Their openness to questions made the experience interactive, allowing me to enhance my networking skills and gain a clear understanding of the professional environment.
Today, as a Graduate Accountant at BlueRock, I look back with gratitude at this incredible journey. BlueRock offers rigorous training and a structured mentoring program. For every two graduate accountants, there’s an experienced senior accountant who acts as a mentor, providing guidance, support and real opportunities to learn on the job. There are also various networking activities, like rooftop parties, which give new graduates like me the chance to build relationships within the organisation.
My advice to future participants of the Career Discovery Immersion is to ask questions. It’s natural to feel hesitant during networking events, but asking questions is the best way to learn about a company and build meaningful connections. Don’t be afraid to seize every opportunity to engage and learn.
I’m incredibly thankful to the Faculty of Business and Economics and everyone at BlueRock for creating enriching programs like Career Discovery Immersion. It truly opened the door to a career path that I’m passionate about.
Career Discovery Immersion is open to FBE students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce or a Melbourne Business School degree. Interested in participating? Learn more here.
