Overlooking the Melbourne metropolis from the tenth level of the Law Building, Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) students were invited to a Fireside Chat with Christopher Crellin, the Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Sony Music Entertainment (UK & Ireland) and FBE alumnus. The event aimed to give student leaders a multidimensional insight into Chris’ academic and career journey, as well as enlighten us on the limitless paths that our degree could take us.

Ushering in the official Fireside Chat event, Professor Paul Jensen prefaced Chris’ introduction by extolling what he believed to be the most distinguishing aspect of the Faculty; the quality of our alumni.

The Fireside Chat welcomed questions from the audience. Moderated by two students, Chris answered questions ranging from his university experience, advice to students, and his interest and experience in the music industry.

Delving into his senior management role at Sony Music Entertainment, he explained the importance of adaptability in the music industry, an environment that is constantly shifting and changing. In the face of AI, Chris emphasised the importance of upper management in protecting artist integrity and rights. By extension, he encouraged students to seek careers that align with their personal values, highlighting how workplace culture must facilitate creativity, innovative thinking and genuine curiosity. Ultimately, he noted how as students and employees, we choose which institutions we wish to work and thrive under, and we are thus the ultimate deciders of our career path.

For many students, this was undeniably the most valuable part of the event.

“An incredibly insightful experience”

Chris was great to chat with; approachable, knowledgeable, and keen to share his experience with students.

In conversation, Chris repeatedly emphasised the power of listening to others and admitting what we do not know. Proclaiming himself as a natural introvert, Chris’ insights highlight the importance of charisma, creativity and tenacity in navigating our careers. However, he ultimately champions the ability and desire to listen to others, regardless of their position - a crucial quality in a student, and a CFO.

Chris gave excellent advice that inspired me to have an open mind; your background doesn’t define your future.

Often, the notion of a ‘Commerce student’ evokes images of spreadsheets, investment banks and stock exchanges. Alumni and industry leaders such as Chris show us that a degree is not a singular road. Rather, with passion, a curious attitude, and a desire to inspire change and improvement, it can lead us down colourful and diverse paths.
