Dear Students,
Welcome back to campus for Semester 2, 2026.
My name is Serge da Motta Veiga, and I am delighted to welcome you to a new semester as the new Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE).
Last semester, we farewelled Professor Paul Kofman after 14 wonderful years as Dean. He leaves an incredible legacy and certainly some big shoes to fill. I arrive with great enthusiasm for the role and feel incredibly privileged to have joined such a prestigious university and an exceptional faculty that continues to be recognised among the best in the world. While I will bring my own leadership style to the role, I share Paul's passion for providing students with an educational experience that challenges and inspires you, unlocks amazing opportunities and equips you for whatever career you choose.
Only last month I made the big move from Paris to Melbourne, and I have found myself experiencing many of the same feelings as our new students including excitement, curiosity and at times, a touch of nervousness.
While I managed to find my office fairly quickly, there have been a few occasions where I have taken the scenic route to meetings while learning my way around our beautiful and expansive campus.
I am quickly discovering some of my favourite coffee spots, which I understand is an essential part of being a true Melburnian. When it comes to coffee, Melbourne certainly lives up to its reputation. As for chocolate croissants, I am sorry to say that my loyalty will always remain with Paris.
I am looking forward to getting to know our student community over the coming months. And to help you get to know me, feel free to watch this short video sharing my story and what brought me to Melbourne and FBE.
What excites me most about joining this Faculty is the opportunity to listen, learn and work together with our students. I am genuinely interested in your experience at the University of Melbourne and look forward to hearing your perspectives as we continue to strengthen and enhance student life at FBE.
There is a great sense of belonging that comes from being part of our connected community. Whether through clubs and societies or sporting teams, there are many ways for you to get involved and meet other wonderful people who will soon become lifelong friends.
At FBE, learning extends well beyond the classroom, and we are committed to providing opportunities that help you build skills, gain experience and prepare for a meaningful and exciting career in your chosen field.
The BCom Career Launchpad and MBS Career Elevation are great places to explore opportunities available this semester, and I encourage you to bookmark the FBE Student Calendar to stay informed about upcoming events and programs, including initiatives such as Career Discovery Immersion.
Please remember that support is always available. Whether you need academic guidance or personal support, there are many services to help you thrive. The FBE Wellbeing Hub at 99 Barry Street and Stop 1 at 757 Swanston Street are excellent places to start. And if you are on campus on Thursdays during teaching weeks, you might be able to meet Coco, the Faculty's much-loved wellbeing dog, who is always happy to provide a warm welcome.
Your safety and wellbeing are also a priority for me and for everyone at the University. To help you feel safe and confident while on campus, I encourage you to download the SafeZone app, which provides direct access to University Security and emergency support services when needed.
As we begin Semester 2, I encourage you to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead, challenge yourself to learn and grow, and take the time to create unforgettable memories with new friends and connections along the way.
I look forward to seeing all that you will achieve this semester and meeting many of you throughout the year.
Warm regards,
Serge da Motta Veiga
