Shashwat Goyal undertook the cross-disciplinary Creating Innovative Professionals subject in 2024 alongside fellow students in Melbourne Business School and the Faculty of Engineering and IT.
My professional experience with Northern Health Foundation began when I was selected in Creating Innovative Professionals to work on an innovative project as part of my Master of International Business degree. My team's task was to design an innovative, financially sustainable business that addressed an unmet need within the hospital's ecosystem. It was an invaluable experience that led to the development of many professional skills and personal growth opportunities.
Working alongside three fellow students (Olivia, Yisheng, and Siddhanth) as well as our mentor, Anya, I undertook a structured 12-week journey that transformed theoretical knowledge into practical expertise. Our methodology was based on human-centred design principles, where we conducted in-depth interviews and discussions with diverse stakeholders including board members, managers, nurses, volunteers, and most importantly, patients. Weekly lectures followed by team meetings enabled us to immediately apply new theories to our project, ensuring a continuous cycle of learning and implementation.
Under the guidance of our sponsor organisation, Northern Health Foundation, we worked closely with Pina Di Donato, Executive Director Public Affairs and Foundation, who provided invaluable industry insights throughout our journey. Our project progressed step-by-step, beginning with the development of a detailed project brief and a comprehensive data collection plan. We utilised mind mapping techniques to organise our findings and created a robust framework using the Value Proposition Canvas to shape our solution. The continuous improvement process of our work, including validation sessions with stakeholders, fostered a growth mindset within our team as we learned to adapt and refine our approach based on feedback.
The experience demanded the application of various professional skills, as we progressed from initial concept to final presentation. Our team conducted thorough stakeholder interviews, analysed data-driven solutions, and developed proposals that aligned with both organisational needs and ethical considerations. Working in a culturally diverse team enhanced our cross-cultural communication abilities and taught us to leverage different perspectives for better outcomes. The journey concluded with a professional pitch to our sponsor organisation, where we presented our refined solution backed by extensive research and validation.
An interesting challenge of this project was its dual leadership structure, requiring us to manage deliverables between academic requirements and industry expectations. This unique aspect provided insight into the complexities of professional project management and the importance of maintaining clear communication channels with multiple stakeholders.
The Creating Innovative Professionals experience has significantly enhanced my employability skills, particularly in areas such as professional communication, strategic thinking, project management, and stakeholder management. The practical exposure to the Australian work environment has been particularly valuable as an international student, providing insights into local business practices and professional expectations. These skills and experiences have already proven invaluable in my career journey, offering a strong foundation for my future professional endeavours.
For Melbourne Business School students seeking to enhance their professional capabilities, the University of Melbourne offers unique opportunities to engage with industry partners and work on real-world projects. Creating Innovative Professionals is delivered by the Faculty of Engineering and IT, but is also available to students enrolled in specific programs under the Faculty of Business and Economics, including the Master of Management Suite and Master of International Business. While the semester demands dedication and persistence, the profound professional growth and real-world experience gained throughout the journey make it incredibly rewarding. I strongly encourage eligible students to embrace these opportunities to develop their professional capabilities while making meaningful contributions to real-world organisations.
