Over the winter break, I completed IBUS20007 International Business Experience as part of my Bachelor of Commerce degree. Along with 29 other students, I travelled to Jakarta, Indonesia, for a two-week study tour.
This intensive subject combined my academic knowledge with real-world experience, incorporating cross-cultural collaboration and business practices in a global setting.
My intentions
I applied to take this subject because I wanted to learn how international companies respond to local cultures and emerging markets. As one of the world’s largest and most dynamic economies, Indonesia provided the perfect backdrop for this subject.
My experience in Jakarta
On the day I arrived in Jakarta, I felt uncertain and out of place in an unfamiliar environment. My doubts were quickly replaced with excitement as the study tour progressed. We attended lectures at Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia) in the first week. In our second week, we visited companies like Unilever Indonesia, BMW, Bank Syariah Indonesia, Oppo, and the Australian Embassy.
These experiences were insightful, revealing business issues and approaches employed by Indonesian companies operating in an environment with distinct regulations and social and economic conditions. I especially enjoyed learning how global companies localise business processes, exercise consistency and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
In addition to the academic and industry features of this subject, the experience was culturally enriching. I tasted Indonesian street food for the first time and learnt about the local traditions. Engaging in community-based exercises and visiting local museums helped me understand the importance of history and cultural awareness in business.
Travelling together on a student team, we developed natural connections, and I made friends. I shared a room with an international student who gave me a new outlook on life, including everyday routine habits. Our conversations would sometimes morph into engaging ‘mini cross-cultural case study’ discussions.
My insights
International Business Experience helped me develop personally and professionally. It enhanced my communication and adaptability, challenged my assumptions and provided me with clarity about my career interests in marketing and international partnerships. This experience also reinforced my goals in pursuing international roles that require cultural empathy and strategic thinking.
I wholeheartedly recommend this subject to anyone looking to broaden their horizons, both academically and personally. It’s more than just a study tour—it’s a valuable life experience that stays with you long after the flight home.
