Profile

I am an International Business and Strategic Management scholar.

My research mainly looks at two quite different aspects of multinational enterprises’ strategy choices – how individuals make key expansion decisions, and the history of multinationals’ engagement with Australia.

For the first aspect, I have worked closely with senior executives to understand their cognitive processes in assessing opportunities and risks.

For the latter, I have been working with historian colleagues to track over a century of companies’ moves.

Current Projects

My current projects focus on (a) how executives differ in their perceptions of distances, especially cultural distance and (b) how entrepreneurs reimagine competitive opportunities in a mature/declining market.

The first project looks at perceptions of internationalisation opportunities in Islamic versus traditional banking.

The second project has me looking at different decisions craft breweries have made to find high-margin opportunities beyond the reach of the big beer multinationals.
