Empowering Women in Economics and Finance: A Panel and Networking Evening
Held on 6 May 2025, the Women in Economics and Finance (WESS) event brought together students and industry professionals for an engaging evening of education, discussion, and networking.
Funded by the FBE/MBSL Diversity & Inclusion Small Grants Program, the event featured three panel discussions with speakers from leading organisations such as J.P. Morgan, Lazard Australia, Mandala Partners, Deloitte Access Economics, and academics from the University of Melbourne.
Panel topics included career pathways, current industry trends, and the challenges and opportunities facing women in the fields of economics, finance, and academia. A Q&A session and informal networking followed, providing students with valuable opportunities to form meaningful connections.
This initiative was proudly delivered in alignment with WESS' mission to educate and empower women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Building LEAP: A New Network for LGBTQ Economists and Allies
Supported by the FBE/MBSL Diversity & Inclusion Small Grants Program, funding for this initiative enabled the establishment of LEAP: LGBTQ Economists and Allies in Australasia and the Asia-Pacific—a new professional network dedicated to fostering visibility, connection, and scholarly exchange among LGBTQ-identifying economists, their allies, and researchers working on LGBTQ-related topics.
The grant provided the critical early resources to lay the foundation for a vibrant, inclusive community. Key achievements included:
- Development of a membership database and governance structure
- Co-designed community values, website content, and event planning involving individuals with lived experience
- Creation of a strong visual identity, logo, and branding now featured across LEAP’s website and social media channels (LinkedIn and Bluesky)
- Hosting of several online meet-ups to begin building cross-institutional and cross-sector connections
These initial steps have paved the way for a sustainable and impactful network, with plans including virtual seminar series, mentoring programs, research showcases, and the inaugural LEAP Summit in 2026.
LEAP is positioning the Faculty of Business and Economics—and Australia more broadly—as a regional leader in advancing LGBTQ scholarship and inclusion within economics and adjacent disciplines.
Women in Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Celebrating Female Leadership in STEM and Business
Held on 28 August 2025 at Copland Theatre, Women in Innovation & Entrepreneurship was a collaborative event proudly supported by the FBE/MBSL Joint D&I Committee through the Diversity & Inclusion Small Grants Program.
Delivered in partnership with Startup Link, RoboGals, and the Melbourne Space Program, the event brought together inspiring female leaders and innovators from across the business, STEM, and entrepreneurship sectors.
Panellists shared personal experiences and insights on innovation, leadership, and navigating entrepreneurial spaces, while attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, gain new perspectives, and build meaningful professional connections.
The event successfully advanced conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion by spotlighting women’s contributions to industries where they continue to be underrepresented.
Queer in Corporate: Elevating LGBTQIA+ Voices in Business
Hosted by the Queer Commerce Club and 180 Degrees Consulting on 22 September 2024, Queer in Corporate was a panel and networking evening aimed at exploring the realities of being LGBTQIA+ in today’s corporate world. Proudly supported by the FBE/MBSL Diversity & Inclusion Small Grants Program, the event brought together students, staff, and professionals for an honest and empowering conversation.
Panellists from top firms such as KPMG, BCG, and King & Wood Mallesons shared personal stories, insights into navigating workplace culture, and experiences with diversity and inclusion programs. Topics ranged from discrimination and allyship to inclusive hiring practices and fostering LGBTQIA+ visibility in professional settings.
With over 50 attendees, the event provided a rare and meaningful opportunity for queer students and allies to connect with professionals, build confidence, and envision their place in the corporate space. Following the panel, a vibrant networking session enabled further dialogue, mentorship, and relationship building.
This initiative successfully exceeded its goals—empowering students, strengthening queer visibility within FBE and MBSL, and contributing to a more inclusive academic and professional community.
