Research training and development scholarships

A range of funding is available to support graduate researcher training, development and research enhancement activities.

FBE-GREG (FBE Graduate Research Enhancement Grant)

The Faculty of Business and Economics provides each graduate researcher with a $15,000 AUD research enhancement grant available for use while enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy (Business and Economics).

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be currently enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy (Business and Economics) course;
  • be Confirmed;
  • formally lodge a timely Leave to Study Away application to cover any FBE-funded travel; and
  • have written approval from their Principal Supervisor, Graduate Research Director and Head of Department.

Purpose

Graduate researchers can use FBE-GREG funding for research-related purposes, including:

Travel funding

  • as funding to support Faculty Graduate Research Abroad Travel (FBE-GRATS) or any other Travel scholarships that require a Departmental contribution
  • for domestic research-related travel funding:
    • economy airfares, transfers and local reasonable transportation costs
    • Visas and Permits
    • Required immunisations (as recommended by smartraveller.gov.au)

Conferences, Workshops, Consortia

  • available to cover attendance and/or presentation (graduate researchers should check with their department Graduate Research Administrator for any specific requirements) and include:
    • registration
    • accommodation
    • conference-related events

Other research-related expenses

  • archival research costs
  • Photocopying or printing expenses
  • Translation costs
  • Equipment/consumables essential for fieldwork research
  • Software and external hard drives
  • Specialised research training (domestic or international)
  • Data collection-related expenses
  • Purchase of appropriate survey panels
  • Purchase of mailing lists and data sets

How to apply

Contact your Department Graduate Research Administrator and supply them with the required approvals and budget tracker

Note: For travel-related funding, you must be approved for study away before your departure. You should apply well in advance to allow for any delays in the application process. Graduate researchers travelling to a high-risk destination which requires approval by the Academic Registrar, should submit their request for study away at least two months prior to the date of travel. FBE-GRATS (FBE Graduate Research Abroad Travelling Scholarship)

FBE-GRATS (FBE Graduate Research Abroad Travelling Scholarship) is a competitive travel funding scheme that supports the overseas research-related activities of our graduate researchers to enhance their researcher development.

There are two rounds of FBE-GRATS per year. The dates for 2024 are as below.

  • Round 1 – Applications open 15 April 2024 and close on 14 May 2024.
  • Round 2 – Applications open 16 September 2024 and close on 15 October 2024.

The FBE-GRATS online application form will be open during the above periods.

Eligibility

The below eligibility conditions apply:

  • Your candidature must be confirmed. Probationary candidates are not eligible to apply.
  • You must have confirmed the funding from your Department. Note that your Department funding must be equal to or greater than the sum you are seeking from FBE-GRATS and is not taken from your FBE-GREG allocation.
  • You must have obtained your ORCID ID.
  • You must complete all requirements of the FBE-GRATS application process (see further details in the guidelines document below) – including submitting a Study Away application; completing the FBE-GRATS budget tracker spreadsheet; and writing a research travel proposal/statement of purpose.

Purpose

The funds are available for overseas research-related activities and purposes such as:

  • interviews
  • experiments
  • data collection,
  • overseas summer school attendance
  • fieldwork
  • conference or other public presentation
  • visits to archives or library resources

Jim Perkins PhD Travelling Scholarship

This scholarship honours the life and work of Emeritus Professor Jim Perkins, MA PhD Camb, MCom Melb. Established in 2014, the scholarship funds up to a year's overseas travel to do research in Economics or Econometrics at The University of Melbourne or at The University of Cambridge or any other university in the United Kingdom's research-intensive Russell Group.

This travelling scholarship is open to graduate researchers enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics.

M. A. Bartlett Research Scholarship

Funding to support fieldwork

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Mary Anna Bartlett and is offered to high achieving research students who intend to undertake study related travel or fieldwork. You are automatically considered for the M. A. Bartlett Research Scholarship if you have applied for a travel or fieldwork grant offered by your faculty.

Riady Scholarship

Funding to support fieldwork in Asia

This scholarship was established with a donation from FBE alumnus, Tjahaja James Lee Riady, and is awarded to high-achieving research students who intend to undertake fieldwork in Asia. One FBE scholarship is awarded each year. The award is based on academic merit.
