Watch: Agribusiness Fireside Chat - Carbon Today and Biodiversity by 2030

The Faculty of Business and Economics hosted the Agribusiness Fireside Chat at the University of Melbourne, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Carbon Today and Biodiversity by 2030: An Agribusiness Fireside Chat

Sustainability is at the heart of Australian farming and the Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework communicates the goals of the agricultural industry. ‘Carbon Today and Biodiversity by 2030’ is an important topic that needs to be tackled. While the industry is currently absorbed with net zero emissions today, biodiversity is becoming increasingly important and can no longer be overlooked.

An impressive panel of industry and academic experts discussed the role of biodiversity in sustainable farming and championed the need for early adoption. The panel discussed how biodiversity is defined, measured, accounted for and disclosed, but most importantly, how the industry can start action towards net zero with a focus on biodiversity on the horizon.

The panel included:

  • Josie Zilm, Agribusiness Executive, NAB
  • Dr Rachel Morgain, Deputy Director, Melbourne Biodiversity Institute, University of Melbourne
  • Professor Naomi Soderstrom, Professor of Sustainable Accounting, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Melbourne
  • Professor Bill Malcolm, Agricultural Economist, School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences, University of Melbourne

The panel discussion was moderated by:

  • Professor Richard Eckard, Professor of Sustainable Agriculture, University of Melbourne, and Director, Primary Industries Climate Challenges Centre
