University of Melbourne and Melbourne Business School reaffirm commitment to sustainability with 2023 PRME report

The Sharing Information on Progress report for 2023 was submitted to Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) in November last year, a significant milestone in the Faculty’s and School’s joint commitment to improving sustainability performance and reporting as global leaders in business education.

The PRME is a voluntary UN-supported initiative established to help business schools and universities embed sustainability principles and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals across their curriculum, research, activities and engagement.

Joining PRME was one of the first actions undertaken by the Faculty of Business and Economics and Melbourne Business School's Joint Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability (ERS) Committee. The Faculty and the School became co-signatories to PRME in 2019.

Sustainability initiatives across teaching, research and engagement activities are robust. Mapping and reporting the sustainability profile for the PRME helps the Faculty and Melbourne Business School to report on sustainability for accreditations with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the European Foundation for Management Development’s Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), as well as reporting internally to the University on sustainability goals and accomplishments.

The 2023 report includes case studies about:

  • Support for student clubs and societies to develop sustainability guides on energy transitions
  • MBSL student success in the global entrepreneurship Hult Prize competition
  • The National Indigenous Business Summer School
  • Embedding sustainability in our coursework curriculum

The report also celebrates and recognises research contributions and expertise across various sustainable development goals, including:

  • Overcoming gender bias in the boardroom
  • Implications of long-term poverty
  • PhD students working on innovative sustainability research
  • The economics of electric cars
  • ESG training for executive education
  • Dilin Duwa’s partnerships with Indigenous communities across Australia
  • The impact of Australia’s Modern Slavery Act (2018)

Deans Professor Paul Kofman and Professor Jenny George acknowledge the tremendous contributions of their colleagues to the outcomes captured in the report.
