Global Consulting Group (GCG) is an FBE student club that provides free consulting services to charities and not-for-profits and connects university students with Industry professionals. GCG brings together the energy of today's students with the experience of industry leaders to create meaningful change in the community.

Continuing a three-year annual tradition, GCG’s flagship event, Career Compass, exists to inspire high-potential university students, connect them with industry representatives and help them discover future opportunities. Run in collaboration with other FBE-affiliated clubs at the University of Melbourne such as BusinessOne Consulting, Mint, Enactus and Actuarial Students’ Society, the event has continued to expand, partnering with STEM clubs, Dscubed and Impetus. In April this year, Career Compass opened its doors for students to meet face-to-face with representatives from top Melbourne-based finance, consulting and STEM firms.

This year's event grew from 10 to 25 attending firms with over 220 attendees, making it one of GCG's largest networking events to date. Career Compass featured a panel of senior consultants, developers and senior actuaries from top-tier firms including PwC, EY and KPMG. In an open networking space with firms spread throughout the room, students had the chance to hear from representatives on their experiences, connect with fellow GCG committee members, and meet other students from STEM and finance backgrounds.

The event reflects one of GCG's key goals: cultivating the next generation of consulting leaders and promoting early career growth.

For FBE student Kevin Yu, Career Compass jumpstarted his career. At the event, he was able to connect with Capgemini Head of Early Careers, James Schlunke, who offered influential advice on consultancy. Kevin is now an Associate Consultant at Capgemini, crediting James’ advice for making a notable difference in his application. Coming from a computer science background, Kevin was surprised by the welcoming atmosphere regardless of degree. "Career Compass spans industries well beyond commerce, and even within fields like consulting, the pathways are more diverse than you'd imagine. I'm proof of that," he says.

Looking ahead, GCG plans to grow its partnership pipeline and bring in a broader network of firms as the club expands, evolving Career Compass alongside influence and reach. GCG recognises how quickly the talent landscape is changing within consulting and beyond and strives to broaden the industries and career pathways represented at Career Compass. This year's event reflected that shift, collaborating with STEM clubs and bringing representatives from venture capital firms and startups onto the professional panel which allowed students to explore career paths outside the traditional consulting pathway.

For students interested in gaining key consulting skills while making a meaningful social impact, meeting committee members at Welcome Night during the first week of each semester or holding a coffee chat with GCG’s Project team members is a great way to meet the GCG family.
