‘Incredibly generous gift’: New scholarship offers 26 students full fee remission, significant living allowance for Faculty’s 100th birthday

The University of Melbourne is proud to announce the Sidney Myer Centennial Scholarship, established with a gift from the Sidney Myer University Trust, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2024.

There are several scholarships available under the overarching title of the Sidney Myer Centennial Scholarship package, aimed at groups underrepresented in the current Bachelor of Commerce cohort, and students who have demonstrated disadvantage or need for financial support to pursue tertiary study.

“This is one of the most generous scholarships ever given by the University – certainly the most generous from the Faculty,” said Faculty of Business and Economics Dean, Professor Paul Kofman.

“The scholarships will be transformational for those who receive them.”

Up to 26 Bachelor of Commerce students will be awarded 100% fee remission and a living allowance of $37,500 per year for the three years of their undergraduate degree beginning in 2024. Recipients will not pay any tuition fees throughout the duration of their degree.

This includes up to 16 domestic students and 10 international students.

The approximate value of the domestic scholarships is up to $163,000, and the international award is valued at up to $274,000.

The scholarship will support:

  • Domestic undergraduate students experiencing financial disadvantage
  • High-achieving domestic students who identify as women (cis-gender or transgender) or non-binary
  • Students seeking asylum in Australia
  • Permanent Australian humanitarian visa holders
  • International students who are currently underrepresented in the Bachelor of Commerce

All applicants are automatically considered for this scholarship when they receive an offer to the Bachelor of Commerce. Refugees and asylum seekers in Australia who cannot access CSPs are eligible but will need to apply.

“We are proud to offer this scholarship package, thanks to an incredibly generous gift from the Sidney Myer University Trust, and ring in the anniversary celebrations by giving these students the best possible start to their tertiary education,” said Professor Paul Kofman.

“Research from our faculty has time and again proved the immense social and economic benefits of diversity, inclusion and equity, especially in commerce. This scholarship program is about walking that talk and supporting underrepresented students to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne,” said Professor Kofman.

He said breaking down financial barriers for students and allowing them to focus on their education will be transformational for the recipients.

Scholarships will be awarded to students commencing in the Bachelor of Commerce in 2024.

The Faculty of Business and Economics is celebrating its centenary birthday, ‘FBE100’, in 2024-2025.

The Faculty was established in 1924 with teaching for the Bachelor of Commerce degree commencing in 1925.
