Modern Slavery: Associate Professor Vikram Bhakoo wins 2023 Reel Impact Prize

Congratulations to Associate Professor Vikram Bhakoo for winning the University of Melbourne’s 2023 Reel Impact Prize.

Three University of Melbourne academics from the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Business and Economics were awarded the prize at a film screening and panel event on July 24.

The Reel Impact competition aims to encourage creative research translation by challenging researchers at the University of Melbourne to present their research impact as either a 60-second engaging video or a visual storyboard that describes their research and the impact it has had within society to a non-specialist audience.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to build and enable a culture of research impact across the University to ensure that discoveries and ideas create meaningful and positive changes within society.

Associate Professor Vikram Bhakoo received the award for his entry, Combating Modern Slavery in Global Supply Chains.

Dr Bhakoo is an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management in the Department of Management & Marketing and the area head of the Operations & Supply Chain Group.

His research on modern slavery in the Thai seafood industry found how local NGOs can assist in mitigating modern slavery practices specifically around detecting such practices, developing migrant recruitment policies, and establishing welfare committees.

Modern Slavery is a global problem across multiple countries and industries and Dr Bhakoo’s research uses in-depth case studies to influence legislation and urge companies to employ a more ethical and sustainable supply chain.

In 2023, a coalition of human rights organisations and academics, including Dr Bhakoo, released a research report revealing the results of a detailed survey of nearly 90 business groups on the impact of Australia’s Modern Slavery Act.
