James Gorman AO appointed University of Melbourne Enterprise Professor in Business & Economics

The Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Melbourne is delighted with the appointment of prominent Melbourne alumnus Mr James P Gorman AO as Honorary Enterprise Professor in Business & Economics.

Following graduation with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, James joined law firm Phillips Fox and Masel before heading to the United States where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School. He then joined McKinsey & Company where he became a senior partner in the firm’s financial services practice. In 1999, James joined Merrill Lynch as chief marketing officer, eventually going on to lead the company’s US, and subsequently, global private client businesses.

James joined Morgan Stanley in 2006 as the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Global Wealth Management Group. He went on to serve as Co-President and Co-Head of Corporate Strategy of Morgan Stanley, and played an integral role creating an industry-leading wealth management organization when he led the combination of Morgan Stanley’s and Citi’s Smith Barney’s wealth management businesses. James assumed the role of CEO in 2010 and Chairman in 2012. During his tenure, Morgan Stanley has grown tremendously, and recently completed two transformative acquisitions of E*Trade and Eaton Vance.

Among his civic activities, Mr. Gorman serves as a Director of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Co-Chair of the Board of Overseers of the Columbia Business School, and is a member of the Financial Services Forum, Business Council and the Business Roundtable. He also formerly served as a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and President of the Federal Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Reserve Board.

In 2020, James Gorman was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the finance and banking sectors through executive roles at the national and international level.

Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Melbourne, Professor Paul Kofman, welcomes Mr Gorman to the role of Melbourne Enterprise Professor – an exclusive cohort of business and public sector leaders actively engaging the corporate and public sector with academia.

Professor Kofman says: “Mr Gorman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience – from global finance leadership to setting international strategy in financial services, dealing with a Global Financial Crisis and responding to the COVID pandemic – to the classroom, adding highly valuable experiential learning and business-related engagement to our students’ educational experience”.
