Faculty of Business and Economics appoints AI expert Matt Kuperholz as Honorary Enterprise Professor

The University of Melbourne is pleased to welcome Professor Matt Kuperholz as its new Honorary Enterprise Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

The faculty seeks to be at the forefront of AI-driven methodologies and research, focusing on how AI can be integrated into work and life to optimise individual, organisational, and societal benefit-driven methodologies and research, focusing on how AI can be integrated into work and life to optimise individual, organisational, and societal benefit.

To help lead this strategic direction, Matt brings his expertise as an AI expert and Data Scientist, supported by a wealth of industry experience. An FBE alumnus with a BComm majoring in both Actuarial Science and Computer Science, Matt’s interdisciplinary foundation enables him to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application across data, digital technologies, and AI, including trust, responsibility, and governance of AI systems.

Matt’s tenure at Deloitte and PwC illustrates his thought leadership in analytics and data science. As Partner and Chief Data Scientist at PwC, he worked at the nexus of data analytics and strategic business decision-making and continues to operate at the cutting edge of AI, data science, and business analytics application and development.

From 2017 to 2022, Matt also led PwC’s global Responsible AI program to innovate, develop and deliver solutions to ensure AI bias was understood, transparency and explainability maximised, and systems remained robust, safe, and aligned with ethical and regulatory expectations.

A leading innovator and expert in data, analytics, and AI, Matt has been recognised as Australia’s number one Analytics Leader by the Institute of Analytic Professionals of Australia (2018), included in the Global Top 100 Innovators in Data and Analytics by Corinium (2020), and named among the Top 100 Knowledge Workers by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the Chief Scientist.

Matt’s not-for-profit venture, MorH, also highlight his commitment to the broader governance and trust implications of technological advancement in business and society.

He has also previously held the position of Professor of Practice for Deakin’s Centre for AI and the Future of Business from 2022 to 2023.
