Dear students,

As the campus cools with the arrival of winter and we move through the final weeks of Semester 1, we approach the end of the teaching period and transition into SWOT Vac, exams, and a well-earned break.

There is no better time than now to begin preparing for your upcoming exams. Whatever study methods work best for you, make sure you finish the semester strong, with results you can be proud of.

Study support and mentoring

As a University of Melbourne student, you have worked hard to be here, and we want to ensure you receive the best support on your journey with us to guide you to a successful career. There are many resources and services available to support your preparation, including advice for preparing for different kinds of examsStop 1, and exam timetables and rules.

You can also connect with supportive mentors to help you year-round in your studies and professional development. Whether you are seeking an alumni, academic, peer, or industry mentor, there is a match to suit everyone.

Looking after your mental health

I also want to acknowledge that this assessment period can naturally bring added stress. Many of you are balancing study with work, social commitments, sport, and the demands of everyday life, which can at times feel overwhelming.

Please know that support is available to you now and throughout the year.

The FBE Student Wellbeing team is here to help through connection, referrals, and targeted programs. You can contact them confidentially to book an appointment or visit them at 99 Barry Street (Building 326).

In addition, you can access the University’s Health ServicesCounselling and Psychological Services, or the Student Union’s Welfare Department for further support.

Opportunities for next semester

Before you head into your well-deserved break, there are a few important steps you can take to stay on track, such as planning for internships, programs, and future coursework.

I also encourage you to explore the range of internships and opportunities available via the Career Launchpad (BCom students) or Career Elevation (MBS students). Here, you’ll find key information and deadlines for programs such as WorkHub internships, along with other initiatives that provide valuable real-world experience.

Get involved in social events

Whether this is your first year or you are continuing your studies, it is never too late to get involved in the many clubs and societies. Building connections and making new friends can make a huge difference to your university experience.

Visit the Your FBE Community page to explore ways to get involved and discover the wide range of events happening throughout the year.

Farewell as the Dean: Welcoming your new Dean

It has been a great privilege to serve as Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics for the past 14 years, and to be part of your journey. To our student community, I wish each of you every success in the remainder of your studies at the University and beyond.

When you return for Semester 2, you will be welcomed by your new Dean, Professor Serge Da Motta Veiga, who will lead the Faculty with great dedication and will continue to support and guide you in your academic and personal development.

Best of luck with your exams. I hope you can take time to rest and recharge over the break. Please take care, study hard, and remember to enjoy the journey.

As I conclude my final semester as Dean, I do so with deep gratitude and great confidence in your future.

All my very best,
Paul
