2024 Research Laboratory Fund outcomes

The University of Melbourne is proud to announce and congratulate the three successful applications to be supported as FBE Research Labs commencing in 2024.

The FBE Research Labs are a new initiative and research investment focused on developing strong, sustainable and connected research teams leading state-of-the-art research.

Funded through the Research Laboratory Fund, the Labs' research will showcase our world-class business and economics researchers, profile the Faculty as a world-renown nexus of research excellence and increase the competitiveness of future external funding bids through the development of a track record demonstrating the research capacity and excellence of these teams.

This investment is significant with each FBE Research Lab will receive up to $500,000 over a three-year project/program of research. In this first round, three Research Labs will be funded, with the intention that one additional Research Lab will be funded in each subsequent year.

Transforming Australian Healthcare: Data-Driven Insights for a Healthier Future

This FBE Research Lab brings together researchers from multiple disciplines and institutions to assess the impact of critical healthcare and aged care policy reforms in Australia, including bulk billing incentives for General Practitioners and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme reforms.

This collaborating research team includes Professor Yuting Zhang as the lead researcher (Melbourne Institute, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Melbourne), Associate Professor Jongsay Yong (Melbourne Institute, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Melbourne), Professor Charles Kemp (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne), Professor Cassandra Szoeke (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne), Associate Professor Eric Sun (Stanford University), Professor Inma Hernandez (University of California, San Diego), Mr Mike Stephens (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation), and Professor Nathan Kettlewell (University of Technology Sydney).

Lab for the Practical Applications of Mechanism and Matching Theory

The primary goal of this FBE Research Lab is to develop the capacity/prototyping for the practical implementation of new matching algorithms and exchanges and to showcase how modern mechanisms can be used to address fundamental allocation problems that have significant societal implications. It will enhance collaboration with other research groups in Australia and overseas and create pathways for future projects with external partners.

This FBE Research Lab assembles a strong research lab team of researchers from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Economics: Professor Tom Wilkening (lead researcher), Dr Georgy Artemov, Dr Ivan Balbuzanov, Associate Professor Alexandru Nichifor, and Dr Siqi Pan.

FBE Gender Lab: Promoting Advancement of Women in the Workplace

The FBE Gender Lab brings together research expertise from across three FBE departments to study the factors that contribute to the gender gap in pay and advancement in the labour market. The Lab aims to pioneer new, multidisciplinary and evidence-based insights to inform policy across Australia and globally, training the next generation of researchers along the way. By expanding an already established strong network of world-renowned researchers, the Lab aims to become Australia’s leading centre for research on gender in the workplace.

This FBE Research Lab brings together Associate Professor Victoria Baranov (Lead Researcher, Department of Economics), Dr Marina Gertsberg (Department of Finance), Dr Maria Recalde (Department of Economics), and Professor Lisa Cameron (Melbourne Institute).
