On 30 September, the Faculty of Business and Economics hosted a special edition of the Inspiring Women Reflect series as part of its centenary celebrations.
This sold-out event brought together an audience of 100 women across a wide range of career stages, including industry leaders, emerging professionals, and recent graduates, in a conversation about leadership and success in the workplace.
The evening commenced with a warm welcome by Chancellor Jane Hansen AO and an introduction by Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow Sally Capp AO, who set the stage for an insightful conversation between two prominent figures in women’s leadership: Senator, the Hon Katy Gallagher, and the Hon Ros Kelly AO.
Reflecting on their personal journeys, Sen Gallagher and Ms Kelly offered an insightful perspective on how the professional landscape has gradually evolved into a more inclusive environment for women over the past 50 years.
Recalling her own experiences, Sen Gallagher reflected on the progression from being one of the only women on a ballot to now serving in a gender-equal cabinet. “Women had to put their hand up,” she said, emphasising that real change has been possible because women were willing to step forward.
“We don’t put ourselves forward enough!” Ms Kelly added, encouraging women to embrace every opportunity, no matter how small. “Have a go at whatever it is, even if it’s a sports club. Just get experience,” she urged.
While acknowledging the significant progress made in advancing women into leadership roles, both speakers also addressed the difficult realities many women still face.
The discussion also explored the complex dynamic of balancing demands of leadership responsibilities with family life. “There’s no balance here,” Sen Gallagher said, describing her experience as more of a “work-life collision,” which requires resilience to manage.
Meanwhile, Ms Kelly emphasized the crucial role of support, both from loved ones and other women. “Just supporting other women. You can’t believe how much that matters to a lot of women,” she remarked.
As the speakers reflect on the decades of intergenerational progress, Sen Gallagher expressed her optimism about the future of women leadership.
“I’ve watched every generation shift the dial forward. And it’s thrilling to watch.”
With each generation of women continuing to push boundaries, open doors, and pave the way for those who follow, it indicates a promising future for women in leadership.
To conclude the panel, Ms Kelly emphasized the vital role education plays in empowering women to lead and succeed. “As long as you keep learning, you keep growing.”
Following the panel, Interim Provost Professor Jane Gunn AO thanked the panellists and invited guests to connect and share stories over drinks and canapés, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere to conclude the evening.
This event was not only a celebration of women’s leadership but also a powerful reminder of the ongoing commitment that is required to ensure all women have the opportunity to lead and thrive in their professional careers.
