Julie Yuewen Lu | Master of Management

Julie was studying Construction Management and Property when an e-commerce internship helped her discover her interest in business. Wanting to pursue further studies after completing her bachelors degree, she began researching graduate programs.

“University of Melbourne had always been one of my dream universities,” Julie said. It’s a dream that came true when she was accepted into the Master of Management, and even received a scholarship. Although her undergraduate degree was in a different field, she had no trouble getting into the swing of things. “Foundational economics courses helped me transition smoothly into the program as a cross-disciplinary student,” she explained. She also liked that her program didn’t require specialisation. “I had the freedom to choose courses from multiple areas, which was a great opportunity to discover my interests.”

At the start of her program, Julie received support through a university mentorship program and was paired with an experienced professional, whose career advice proved invaluable. “I was able to better understand my motivation and have insights towards my preferred career paths, while developing and enhancing my communication and networking skills,” she said.

When asked about her overall experience studying at Melbourne Business School, Julie was enthusiastic. She enjoyed her coursework, found her lecturers inspiring, and appreciated the diversity of the student body. “I was able to conduct research, collaborate with distinguished faculty, and foster connections with other students, who came from all around the world and represented different cultural and academic backgrounds.”

During her search for exchange opportunities, Julie was also happy to discover the wide variety of partner institutions and program choices available, and that there were plenty of resources to help her during her application. “The University provides supporting services, including overseas study application guides, information seminars, course planning assessment, and consultation appointments. It’s a great help and makes the application process less overwhelming.”

As for her future career, Julie had already considered several possibilities, including business management, consulting or marketing. Whatever path she chooses, she looks forward to applying the principles she’s learned in her coursework, particularly regarding sustainable business practices. “I hope the knowledge I’ve gained can arm me with the capability and determination to bring strategic management approaches to my future workplace and industry and make positive contributions.”
