Arun Ramachandran | Master of Management

Arun completed an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, but after a year working in the field, he found himself drawn instead toward business strategy and management. It was time for an occupational overhaul.

“After working for one year in my core field, I decided to switch gears and enter the corporate and business strategy field, as I was intrigued by how businesses make decisions. Hence, after careful consideration of my options, I chose to study the Master of Management at Melbourne Business School.”

Multiple factors influenced Arun’s decision. “I chose this program because it covers all the aspects I’ll need to be a successful management consultant,” Arun began. “I decided to major in General Management, due to my interest in operations and strategy.” Arun also appreciated the program’s flexibility. “I wanted to study at a university that provides lots of electives, so that I could customise my degree according to my needs.” Finally, he was impressed by the University’s connection to industry. “The University of Melbourne has global corporate connections and partnerships with large firms such as KPMG, Deloitte, and PwC.”

Extracurricular offerings were the icing on the cake. “The University has a slew of clubs and student-run societies,” Arun said. As a new student, he took part in the Peer Mentoring Program run by the Melbourne Business School Student Association, which ended up being a highlight of his University experience overall. “This program helped me to meet new people, and my mentor helped me acclimatise to the University. Also, I had the opportunity to participate in fun social activities, such as networking events and laser tag.”

Arun also took on key roles in two different student organisations. “As sponsorship manager for TEDx UniMelb, my job was to bring in sponsors and speakers for the various events held during the year,” he began. “It was a meaningful and rewarding experience, providing a platform to share and discuss ideas with the potential to make a positive impact on society.” Arun also served as the Assistant Director of Sponsorship and Finance for Impetus Consulting Group. “It’s a student-led consulting club solving pro-bono cases for not-for-profit organisations,” Arun explained. He emphasised the valuable work experience he gained through the group. “As an aspiring management consultant, I would definitely recommend this incredible club, as it allows you to work on several in-depth projects in various industries.”

As for his post-graduation plans, he hopes to join one of the “Big 3” consulting firms, where he knows he would be challenged with complex but rewarding projects. “After graduating from Melbourne Business School, I hope to join a large strategy consulting firm,” he said, “where I can work on solving the toughest contemporary business problems.”
