Postgraduate Research Scholarship by Natural Hazards Research Australia

Congratulations to Yagebu Xie on receiving a top-up Postgraduate Research Scholarship from Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA).

Yagebu Xie, an actuarial PhD student, has received a top-up Postgraduate Research Scholarship from Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA)

This is a competitive scholarship for postgraduate students researching natural hazard risk. Yagebu commenced in March 2026 and is supervised by Benjamin Avanzi and Hamza Hanbali, with Paula Jarzabkowski and Matthew Mason (University of Queensland).

Yagebu's research will look into financial arrangements between households, insurers and governments to mobilise improvements to individual and community resilience to disaster risk. He has already worked on two relevant projects co-funded by NHRA — Evaluating the Resilient Homes Fund and Evaluating the Resilient Homes Program (in progress) — and looks forward to contributing further to this ever more important societal issue.
