Submissions

Submissions for the Conference are now closed

We invited academics and higher degree research students to submit short papers of their original research on gender and sexuality at work for oral presentations.

Call for submissions

We welcome research on work issues relevant to individuals with specific gender identities, sexual orientations or sexual characteristics, as well as comparisons across these and other intersecting life dimensions. The research can be local, from specific regions around the world or cross-national. In 2022, we want submissions to be related to the conference theme: Accelerating Gender and Sexuality Inclusion at Work.

Your research may directly address the question of what works to accelerate gender and sexuality inclusion at work and in organisations, or it can inform how to develop strategies with this purpose.

In 2022, the conference will be hosted both face to face and online. This opens the possibility for international presenters and delegates to participate. We strongly encourage researchers from all over the world and in particular from the Asia Pacific region to submit their research and to join us online on the day of the conference.

Below, we list some of the areas that are relevant to work studies. This is not an exhaustive list; it is instead meant to provide an indication of the range of topics to be included in this conference. Research included in submissions should focus on how these topics intersect with gender identity, sexual characteristics, and sexual orientation.

Gender and Sexuality at Work Conference

Submission guidelines

Submissions for the Conference are now closed.

Please see below guidelines for the Special Issue on “Accelerating Gender and Sexuality Inclusion in Organisations” we are editing for the Australian Journal of Management.

Short paper review process

Papers submitted for presentation at the conference will be peer-reviewed and authors will be advised of their acceptance by the 12th of November 2021. Please note that by submitting a short paper to the conference, you are also agreeing to review at least one (likely two) short paper(s) submitted by other authors in order to contribute to the peer-review process.

All Conference papers will be refereed using an open review process, (i.e., the identity of the authors and reviewers are known to each other). The transparency of open peer review encourages accountability and civility, generally improving the overall quality of the review and article. We therefore ask reviewers to provide rigorous and collegiate feedback that is designed to help other authors develop their work.

Reviewers will also be asked to rate the quality of the papers along seven dimensions that will help us select the best papers to be presented and to decide on the two Best Paper Awards. The average rating from the two reviewers will only be seen by the Academic Executive Committee.

Papers will be evaluated on a five-point rating scale based on the quality of:

  1. The introduction and framing of the research
  2. The methodology applied to address the topic
  3. Data analysis conducted and results clarity
  4. Discussion of theoretical implications
  5. Discussion of practical implications
  6. Intersectional considerations
  7. Multidisciplinary approach

Special Issue

Dr Victor Sojo, Dr Melissa Wheeler, and Professor Michelle Ryan are editing a Special Issue for the Australian Journal of Management (ABDC Journal Ranking: A; Impact Factor: 2.42) about “Accelerating Gender and Sexuality Inclusion in Organisations”.

Academics submitting their short papers for the conference will receive developmental feedback and will be invited to submit a full paper for the special issue to go out for blind peer review. You can also submit a full paper for consideration and blind peer review directly to the special issue.

If you want to develop a case study showcasing strategies to accelerate gender and sexuality inclusion at work, please reach out to us at gsw-conference@unimelb.edu.au to discuss how to curate it and submit it to the special issue for consideration and blind peer review.

More about the special issue can be found here.

Panel discussions, workshops and symposia

We are inviting organisations that have accumulated extensive expertise on gender, sexual orientation and sexual characteristics at work over the years to prepare specific knowledge sharing activities during the conference. If you are interested in organising a panel discussion, workshop or symposium as part of the conference please get in contact. We look forward to hearing your ideas.
