Jayne Godfrey

Jayne Godfrey is an internationally recognised academic who has made extensive contributions to the accounting profession over many years. Jayne earned an Honours degree in Commerce from the University of Melbourne, Master of Economics from Sydney and PhD from Queensland. Her initial professorial appointment was at Tasmania followed by appointments at Monash, the Australian National University (ANU) and Auckland. An extensive publication record of over 50 refereed publications includes several in The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research and Accounting, Organizations and Society. Her research mainly focuses on the impact of accounting standards on firms’ financing and investment decisions and the financing and investment implications of alternative contractual and reporting arrangements. Standard setters in Canada, the US, Japan, Australia and the US Securities Exchange Commission have utilised her research findings. For many years, Jayne Godfrey was the first-named author of the leading textbook Accounting Theory, which has been used in many countries around the world. Jayne has served in multiple senior management and governance roles. At Monash Jayne was a Distinguished Professor, Head of Department, Deputy-Dean (Research), President of the Academic Board, member of Council and several committees including Finance and Investment, and Vice-Chancellor Selection. Jayne has also served as Dean of Business and Economics at the ANU and Auckland. Beyond academia Jayne Godfrey has been actively involved in standard setting. In 1994 she was a member of Consultative Groups advising the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) and the Public Sector Australian Accounting Standards Board and in 1995 was appointed to the AASB and renewed until 2000. Between 2010 and 2013 she was a member of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research SAC Consult Committee providing input into International Financial Reporting Standards. From 2009 to 2011 Jayne was a member of the Water Accounting Development Committee before joining the Water Standards Board (WASB) (2009-2014). Whilst a member of the WASB Jayne was appointed to the AASB for a second term serving a liaison role promoting consistency of reporting requirements. From 2020 to 2022 Jayne was a member of the Climate Disclosure Standards Board Technical Working Group (Water) and most recently she has been a member of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) Technical Reference Group (2022-2023) providing advice on sustainability reporting. Service to the profession includes senior office holder and committee membership with the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ), CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and the American Accounting Association. Jayne Godfrey is an FCPA and FCA and has been recognised on multiple occasions for her contribution to the profession. In 2001 Jayne was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through business leadership and in the same year named a Tasmanian Telstra Businesswoman of the Year. In 2008 she received the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Accounting and Finance Practice from AFAANZ and in 2013 was awarded life membership of AFAANZ. Jayne Godfrey has the distinction of being named Professor Emerita at ANU and Auckland.
