There has been an increase in the use of simulations in business education. Textbook publishers and other commercial providers offer a range of products allowing students to practice ‘real-world’ situations.  But how do we as educators make best use of such products?

This workshop will allow participants to consider how simulations can be used within their teaching by hearing from colleagues currently doing so:

Paul Finn - Capsim Business Simulation. This simulation runs over the entirety of MGMT90146 Strategic Management. Working in teams, students run companies and compete against each other by making cross-functional and strategic decisions in the areas of R&D, production, HR, finance and marketing. In this session, I will provide an overview of the simulation and how it evolves over the semester. In particular, I will detail how the simulation is integrated with core subject content through continuous assessment and lecture content.

Workshop Objectives

  • Learn how a simulation is incorporated into an FBE subject
  • Discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with simulations as a teaching tool
