BIO:  Dr. Cigdem Talgar is a cognitive psychologist, learning scientist, and a leader in higher education who is committed to evolving university approaches to uniquely prepare learners to succeed in a changing world.  She earned her Ph.D. from New York University in Experimental Psychology where she focused her research on understanding the mechanisms mediating attention.

As the Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at Northeastern University, Cigdem's portfolio includes leadership of the Self-Authored Integrated Learning (SAIL) initiative, the Academic Assessment Group, the Research Institute for Experiential Learning Science and the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research.  Together, these efforts are focused on integrating the teaching and learning landscape at the university for educators and learners alike to ensure that Northeastern’s signature experiential learning model permeates all facets of Northeastern life.

Experiential Throughout:  Helping Students Become Expert Experiential Learners

Learning in authentic environments with authentic consequences can be transformative for students.  Part of this results from the fact that experiential learning can offer all of the necessary conditions necessary for lasting and meaningful learning to occur. This includes factors such as motivation, practice and feedback, and self-directed learning. However, just placing a learner in such an environment without guidance will not yield such results. There is necessary scaffolding that can structure the experience in such a way that the learner can leave the experience with learning that they can utilize in the future.  In this interactive workshop, attendees will have a chance to design such an experiential learning experience, and in doing so, recognize the role of seven different principles of learning in such environments.

Experiential Learning: Prior Knowledge Integration 
Part of the challenge with work-integrated learning and regular curricula is the difficulty that learners have in transferring their prior knowledge into new environments. We see this manifest when we see learners struggling to activate knowledge that they might have gained in pre-requisite courses, or in prior experiences they have had, into to the course we are teaching. While on the surface this might look as though the learners never acquired the necessary knowledge, in most cases, our students have acquired the knowledge but are not able to transfer it into the new context of our courses.  In this interactive workshop, we will work together to develop scaffolding into our courses that will help create the conditions in which learners can transfer their prior knowledge into our courses as seamlessly as possible.  In doing so, we will also be helping our learners develop the important integration skills that they need to activate the knowledge in your courses in future experiences.

Institutional Design for an Experiential Mindset 
With the globalized world of work rapidly evolving in a way that it is recognized more by change than by stability, there is a greater need than ever for agile and flexible learners. The research on experiential learning unequivocally supports the power of authentic learning environment with authentic consequences in the development of the skills necessary for success in such a dynamic work environment. As a result, many institutions are looking to advance these types of opportunities for their students and programs. However, in doing so, a lot of times, institutions offer individual experiences rather than taking on an experiential mindset where they create an experiential ecosystem in which learners can practice these skills seamlessly throughout all of their learning. In this seminar, we will unpack what these “skills for success” are, and how some institutions are adapting their pedagogical models to ensure that they are graduating students who are set up for success in a globalized and rapidly changing world.
