With wider participation and inclusivity being a high priority, the need to adjust assessment away from high stakes exams by focusing on the principles of ‘authentic assessment’ (Villarroel, Boud, Bloxham, Bruna, & Bruna, 2020) particularly post-COVID (White, 2020) has come to the fore. Yet, higher education (HE) still has a large emphasis on final exams, particularly in undergraduate courses/subjects.

This session will discuss a broader way of assessing in HE: Active Engagement Assessment (AEA). AEA focuses on actively learning by assessment by engaging in smaller and larger ongoing assessments throughout the course period. As such, students are actively engaged with course content, staying involved and up-to-date and take an active interest in completing ongoing assignments as summative assessments. This workshop will demonstrate how AEA can be implemented and engage you in discussions to develop your own AEA by that link to your subject’s Intended Learning Outcomes
