Message from the Assistant Dean

I welcome your interest in the Doctoral program at the Melbourne Business School.  Every year, 15-20 students are admitted to our program across the disciplines and competitive applicants are offered a full scholarship including living expenses and fee remission for the duration of their course of study. Here are some of the unique features that make the MBS doctoral program the best of its kind in Australia:

  • Our program prepares you for a research career in business and economics through its innovative combination of two years of advanced coursework in your chosen discipline followed by a thesis supervised by a panel of internationally renowned researchers.
  • Students have access to study abroad and exchange opportunities at Melbourne’s wide range of institutional partners, resulting in an enriched doctoral experience with the option to take on academics from top institutions as external supervisors on their research after confirmation of candidature.
  • The program has a strong culture of collaboration and interdisciplinarity. Students work closely with other members of the Faculty to produce scholarly contributions for top journals in their discipline. Students also come together in the FBE PhD Student Society, the doctoral student association that provides peer support and community.
  • The campus is situated in the heart of the world’s most liveable city. The city of Melbourne, capital of the state of Victoria, is home to many of Australia's largest and oldest cultural institutions such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the National Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of Victoria and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building. As the second most populous city in Australia, Melbourne’s status as the ‘cultural capital of Australia’ is heavily informed by a melting pot of culture.

We are proud of our record of placing students in the world’s leading academic institutions. Our graduates have obtained positions with prestigious universities including the ANU, Manchester, Bath, Monash, UNSW, Singapore Management University and Pittsburgh or with prominent non-university employers such as Goldman Sachs, State Street Boston, and the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance.

If you consider yourself to be highly motivated and a talented, independent thinker and if you are passionate about research, I invite you to contact our doctoral program office, attend an information session and discuss your research interests with one our PhD Directors.
