Haikun Zhan is a final-year Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Economics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests are in the fields of Political Economics, Development Economics, and Economic History.

In her job market paper, she uses a uniquely detailed panel dataset spanning a thousand years to examine whether a strong centralized state facilitated the development of local institutions in Imperial China.
