New Chair in Economic History

The Faculty of Business and Economics is delighted to announce a $5 million gift from the Peter Griffin and Terry Swann Foundation, to revitalise scholarship in the field of Economic History.

"We are thrilled and grateful to receive this generous gift from Peter Griffin and Terry Swann, and we will shortly be undertaking an international search for the Griffin Professor of Economic History,” said Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Professor Paul Kofman.

“Philanthropy plays an important role in the work of the University, and we are very grateful for this support."

Peter Griffin AM is an alum of the Faculty (BCom 1963) and has had a long and successful career in the business world, particularly in the investment and banking sectors. In 2008, he was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the Australian community through support for medical research, arts and charitable organisations.

"I am passionate about Economic History and am very keen that students leave the University of Melbourne with a good understanding of business and finance, and also a deep awareness of previous mistakes made by governments, industry and the banking sector,” Griffin said.

“I want future generations to avoid the mistakes of the past."

This follows an earlier gift from Peter Griffin and Terry Swann, which allowed the Faculty of Business and Economics to hire a Senior Lecturer, Dr John Tang, who is developing and delivering a series of breadth subjects in Economic History.
