Grusha Undwar: From Journalist to Marketer

By Cher Guo

We spoke with Master of Management (Marketing) student Grusha Undwar about what brought her to Melbourne. We explore her post-grad studies, great coffee culture and the promise of a fresh start.

Grusha studied journalism and mass communication in her undergraduate degree. She gained experience and a publication history early, before deciding she wanted to shift her focus. She turned to marketing, eager to explore the variety of the discipline. The Master of Management (Marketing) at Melbourne Business School (MBS) was her first choice.

‘I've always wanted to study abroad, and I was always drawn towards Australia. It's such a culturally accepting place, and I'm a coffee fanatic, so Melbourne was the perfect place to get my caffeine fix. I did some research and zeroed in on MBS. My parents were really supportive as well, they offered me a lot of guidance throughout the application process.'

Grusha’s studies in the Master of Management (Marketing), have given her the chance to discover new subjects and areas of interest.

‘I love Consumer Behaviour. I‘m fascinated by how consumers engage with markets, how their minds work, and how they make purchases. It's quite interdisciplinary, a mix of psychology and marketing. I'm also getting a chance to explore the more analytical and strategic sides of marketing, which compliments my undergraduate studies really well, as that was more public relations and communications.'

Grusha has big plans for next year, including the online Global Business Practicum (GBP) over the summer. Meanwhile, despite studying at home, she’s built on that sense of community by connecting with the MBS Student Association (MBSSA), and the online opportunities they’ve offered.

‘I recently did an alumni mentoring session, and I had the chance to have a chat with an MBS alum, Doris Wu. She gave me so many ideas for practical things I could do while studying online. It really made me feel at home here, like I’m part of the community.'

The Master of Management (Marketing) provides foundation training in a variety of business and management disciplines, with specialist training in marketing. This course is about the means by which organisations attract and retain customers, including aspects of marketing, strategy, customer behaviour, branding, and international marketing.

Grusha has some advice for students who are beginning their own university experience.

‘I would say participate in as many activities as you can, but do not compromise on your education. MBS has so much to offer, but it's just a drop in the ocean when thinking about the bigger picture. It will help you develop as a person. Because, honestly, I see that I'm not the same person I was five months ago. I have grown academically, I have grown as a person, I've grown professionally. I feel like with every passing day I’m prepared to take on new challenges.’
