Business and Economics Dean's Events China

International alumni and friends came together in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong as part of the Business and Economics Dean’s Events Series. The growing international community were able to connect with each other, the Faculty and our Dean in a series of events featuring career focussed panel discussions with industry leaders.

In his Dean’s address, Professor Paul Kofman shared an update on the Faculty's latest teaching, learning and research initiatives, as well as ways for alumni to get involved to support current students through mentoring and internship placements. Alumni particularly welcomed the Dean’s announcement of the Faculty’s launch of online programs, making it easier for internationally based alumni to continue their education.

At the events in Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, the Faculty was joined by ten talented alumni speakers for panel discussions on Career Transitions - Your Next Big Move, facilitated by Professor Bill Harley. We thank Yun Xie (WeChat ID xyaleck), Liang Wu (WeChat ID koutianriyili), Rosaline Luo (WeChat ID luoborosa) and Laura Rui Luo (WeChat ID LauraLoveLuo) in Beijing; Jasmine Lu (WeChat ID luckyjasy), William Kong (WeChat ID William_W_Kong) and Tell Tan (WeChat ID Tell_Tan) in Guangzhou; and Christine Tsang, Jacky Shi and Alvina Chan in Hong Kong for joining us for insightful discussions.

The panellists shared their varied and exciting career journeys and provided advice on making the most of transitions and opportunities during their careers. Never stop learning, always put your hand up for opportunities, and make the most of your highly valuable and active University of Melbourne alumni network were common themes across the discussions in all four cities. Budding entrepreneurs also learnt about the challenges and joys of starting your own business, and advice on how to go about getting funding and support in each city. Beijing Alumni Association Vice-President, Raine Zhang, leader of the Guangdong Province Alumni Network, Junhao Zhang and Acting President of the Hong Kong Alumni Association, Iris Tsoi all kindly provided updates on the activities taking place for alumni in their local communities.

The Dean and the Faculty were delighted to be able to celebrate the tenth year anniversary of the Shanghai Alumni Association at the event in Shanghai. Alumni enjoyed hearing an update on the association from Vice-President Jin Xu and were pleased to honour the ten valuable alumni who were presented with Angel of the Year Awards on the night for their hard work and support of the association and the alumni community. The Faculty would like to congratulate Business and Economics alumni Ding Yiwen, Francis Yang, Yin Weiwei and Jiang Ying for their many contributions.

The support the local Alumni Associations provide throughout the year and the activities they organise are integral to keeping alumni connections strong in China. The Faculty and the University are grateful to have Alumni Associations in China as advisors and friends and thank all the committee members for their dedication and hard work. Graduating students moving from Melbourne are encouraged to seek out their local alumni group worldwide in order to stay connected to alumni and gain support with your careers and transition.

These events are part of the Dean’s Events series that take place in ten cities around the world. To be the first to know about 2018 activities, alumni in the region should ensure their location and email address are up to date, and join the University's WeChat channel: MelbUni1853.
