Deans' Awards 2015 Formal Announcement

It is with great pleasure we announce the winners of the 2015 Deans' Prize for Exceptional Distinction in Research and Research Training

The Exceptional Distinction in Research is awarded to academic staff (level B and above) who publish in a top tier journal. Their paper must be published in one of the journals on the Deans’ Business and Economics Journal List, be in print in 2015 and included in the most recent Departmental collection of publications. The author’s affiliation must also be the University of Melbourne.

The 2015 recipients are:

Professor Simon Loertscher - Level D/E:
Simon Loertscher and his co-authors, published the lead article "A Long Way Coming: Designing Centralized Markets with Privately Informed Buyers and Sellers" in the Journal of Economic Literature which is ranked the number 1 journal in economics in the Web of Science database according to the Journal Impact Factor.

Following publication, Simon has taken several critical steps in implementing the research agenda laid out in this article, with papers on two-sided market design either under revision for or submitted to journals like Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, and the International Journal of Industrial Organization.

Carole Commerton-Forde – Level D/E:
Carole's paper "Dark trading and price discovery" published in the Journal of Financial Economics which is acknowledged within the global academic finance community as one of the top three journals in the discipline.

Carole’s exceptional contribution to the research capacity and profile of the Faculty is further demonstrated via the acceptance of two additional papers accepted for publication in the The Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Banking and Finance respectively.

Andre Sammartino – Level B/C:

Andre's two papers "Decision making and uncertainty: The role of heuristics and experience in assessing a politically hazardous environment" and "Managerial cognition and internationalization" published in 2015 in the Strategic Management Journal and Journal of International Studies, where he was an equal contributor with his co-author.

Andre’s research has achieved significant interest and impact, as evidenced by in-kind and financial support, citations within high quality journals, inclusion in influential government reports and media coverage.

Leon Zolotoy – Level B/C:

Significantly contributing to the research capacity and profile of the Department and the Faculty, Associate Professor Zolotoy published "Executive equity risk-taking incentives and audit pricing" in 2015 in The Accounting Review, a leading journal in the Accounting field."Stock liquidity and managerial short-termism was published in the Journal of Banking and Finance.

Associate Professor Zolotoy has recently received two further publication acceptances: one in The Accounting Review, and the other in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.

The Exceptional Distinction in Research Training is awarded to an academic who has successfully supervised a PhD student to completion in 2015. Exceptional distinction is demonstrated by the successful supervision and placement of the PhD student.

The 2015 recipients are

Karen (Etty) Jehn

Professor Jehn is very active in supervising PhD students and has just recently had two of them complete their degrees: Alyson Meister submitted the bound copy of her thesis in November 2015 after being approved by the examiners. Alyson has also successfully authored a publication in the Academy of Management Review (2014, v39‐4: 488‐512), as well as two publications in the Academy of Management Proceedings (2013 and 2015). For personal reasons relating to her husband’s work Alyson has accepted a position (Assistant Professor) at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia.

Martijn van der Kamp submitted the bound copy of his thesis in October 2015 after being approved by the examiners. He immediately began a Post-Doctoral position at the University of NSW.

David Byrne / Leslie Martin reciecved the Joint Award:

David and Leslie have played a central role as advisors since joining the University (in 2010 and 2012, respectively). Between them they have advised 18 Honours/Masters students.As early career researchers, they have had unprecedented success in research training in 2015.

Their PhD student, Andrea La Nauze, produced an exceptional PhD dissertation affording her a remarkable international job market that included 22 academic job interviews with many of the top economics departments and institutes in the world including U.Chicago, Stanford, LSE, UBC, Michigan, UC Santa Barbara, Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Queen's Smith School, UC Santa Cruz and UNSW. After seven campus visits at many of these highly ranked locations, Andrea has accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh.

This stands as the best academic job market a PhD student in economics has ever had at The University of Melbourne. David and Leslie played a pivotal role in shaping the research, working their research networks to promote Andrea's work, and in guiding Andrea through an intense but rewarding job market including mock interviews and mock job market talks in the department.
