Tongyi Liu | Master of Management (Marketing)

After completing an online-only first semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Master of Management (Marketing) student Tongyi Liu later embraced every opportunity to exchange ideas and interact with fellow students and industry professionals.

“The course allowed me to connect with real-world scenarios through lecture, workshop and seminar formats, which provided everyone with the opportunity to digest knowledge and work in groups as much as possible,” said Tongyi. “Apart from studies, I joined lots of student organisations, societies and clubs on campus.”

When asked why he selected the University of Melbourne (UoM), Tongyi explained that the course structure was the most important factor. “A reasonable course structure can meet your interests and give you the motivation to deep dive into further studies. Once you find that your passion and interest are always present in your daily life, you will get a strong sense of pride and confidence,” said Tongyi. “Besides, the flexibility of the course structure provides students with exposure to different areas or niches, allowing for more comprehensive professional knowledge and expanded career path options.

“The University regularly organises business case competitions and consulting projects that allow students to tackle real-world problems faced by businesses,” he continued. “This provided a platform for us to exercise our problem-solving skills and work collaboratively to create innovative solutions. Such opportunities not only enhance our skills but also prepare us for the professional world. Overall, Melbourne Business School (MBS) has exceeded my expectations in providing a holistic education experience.”

Additionally, Tongyi felt that the strong global reputation of the UoM and MBS would offer him plenty of opportunities to cultivate local and international networks with fellow students, external professionals and companies. “You will meet many smart, innovative and driven peers. The University offers a variety of meaningful activities that are open to all students, regardless of their major or background. If you put your heart into it, you can find what you are looking for within the University's resources,” said Tongyi.

From gaining valuable insights by taking part in the MBS Peer Mentoring Program to organising events as a Faculty Council Member for the Graduate Student Association, Tongyi’s experience at the University has been collaborative and community-driven. He emphasises that stepping out of his comfort zone to communicate with others was incredibly beneficial to both his personal and professional development. “I met people from all around the world and gained insights into different cultures and ways of thinking,” said Tongyi. “These experiences made me more humble, inclusive and adept at interacting and cooperating with individuals from diverse backgrounds.”

For those struggling to decide on whether studying at the University of Melbourne is the right choice, Tongyi had clear advice. “The University of Melbourne is indeed an excellent institution, and it will not disappoint you. At MBS, you will have the chance to connect with people who share your interests, build relationships with outstanding mentors, and experience the richness of our diverse community. The curriculum is designed to be both rigorous and flexible, providing you with the skills you need to succeed in today's competitive job market. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your life, and you will discover strengths and abilities you never knew you had.”
