Biography
Donald MacLaren gained his PhD degree from Cornell University in 1970. He worked at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, from 1970 until 1988 as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics. During that period he undertook consulting work with the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the National Consumer Council. In 1988, he took up an appointment at the University of Melbourne in the School of Agriculture and Forestry and was Head of the Agricultural Economics and Extension Section during 1990–93. He joined the Department of Economics in 1996 and was Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce 1996-98. He has held visiting positions at Cornell University, the University of California at Davis, Stanford University, the OECD and the WTO. He has been a WTO panellist and a consultant for OECD and the World Bank. He is a member of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) and the CESifo Network. He retired from full-time employment in July 2012 and is currently an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Department of Economics. In 2014, he become a Distinguished Fellow of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society.
