Tutor Workshop

1. Engaging students in the Classroom

Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to acquire discipline knowledge and skills and practice   a range of other skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and critical thinking skills. This workshop will take you through practical strategies for adopting a student-centered approach to teaching and learning that promotes and enhances students’ engagement in the classroom.

2. Pair and Group Work

One way to change the pace of the classroom and enhance student engagement in your classroom is to adopt pair and small group activities. This workshop will take you through some practical strategies to facilitate pair and group work in your classroom.

3. Feedback and Assessment

Students often complain that they do not get enough feedback or that feedback on assignments is not timely. The session reviews diverse assessment techniques and how to achieve learning outcomes.  In this session we will discuss the role and timing of feedback, and the types of feedback to improve student learning and how to best design assessments to maximise student learning.

4. Managing Diversity in the Classroom

This workshop highlights the diversity in tutorials and lectures and considers some possible changes to the teaching practice to encourage student participation and promote inclusive student interactions. As a lecturer or tutor, you will learn to facilitate activities which will foster greater inclusion and participation by understanding how diversity can affect the classroom and offer you practical tips for effectively managing diversity.

5. Engaging students with Technology

To keep students engaged in the tutorial and with the subject material it can help to use a variety of techniques. In this session you will learn how to use some readily available educational technologies for your students.
