Pitch your online business idea to a panel of Australia's most prominent Angel Investors and Industry Experts for feedback and prizes at the annual Unimelb StartUp Pitch Competition! The competition is run by internet marketing and social media expert Dr Brent Coker and entrepreneurship experts from Wade Institute. This year we are pleased to be able to offer up to $10k in seed funding as well as four preparatory seminars and workshops to help you and your team prepare for your pitch and the competition in general, read on to find out more! 

Here's a snapshot of the 2015 competition:


All University of Melbourne students are eligible to participate except for students enrolled in the following programs who are instead encouraged to participate as mentors (contact us for details): MBA (including dual degrees), Executive MBA, Senior Executive MBA and Master of Entrepreneurship.

Teams must present an original idea for a company that has not been in existence prior to 2016 and must not be currently backed by incubators, existing companies or venture capitalists. Competition Structure and Judging Criteria

The competition has three phases:

  1. All Interested Teams and Individuals: Expression of interest and preparatory seminars:
    • All applicants will have the opportunity to attend the first two preparatory seminars (see Competition Key Dates below) to progress to the next stage
  2. Registered Teams Only: Submission of proposal, preparatory workshops and preliminary round:
    • All teams will be asked to submit a business proposal to sell a product or service using the internet as a core part of their offering (see below for initial entry instructions)
    • Ten shortlisted teams will be required to attend two further preparatory workshops
    • Ten teams will be shortlisted to appear in the preliminary round, where they present a pitch to judges
  3. Finalists Only: Mentoring session/s and final round:
    • Finalists will be asked to meet with a pitch mentor to refine their pitch
    • Finalists will then present at the competition finals to a panel of Angel Investors and/or Venture Capitalists.

Judges will evaluate each team on the following:

  • Market Need or Market Problem
  • Solution
  • Competitive Advantage
  • Innovativeness
  • Monetization Strategy

Application Process and Forms

There are two application stages for this competition (application links will be published here when applications open):

  1. Expressions of interest and seminar registration form. All University of Melbourne students can register to attend Preparatory Seminars 1 and 2 - you do not have to participate in the competition to attend.
  2. Competition team registration and proposal submission form. Please note the following before starting your application:
    • This form should only be completed by the Team Leader on behalf of the entire team. You will be asked to provide information about your team members - please ensure that you have the following information on hand before starting your application:
      • Student ID
      • First name
      • Last name
      • Preferred first name
      • Course/Program of study
      • Faculty
      • Email address
      • Mobile number
      • Dietary/accessibility requirements
    • You will receive a confirmation email upon form submission - please contact us via fbe-see@unimelb.edu.au if you do not receive this email (ensuring that you check your junk mail in the first instance).
