Joachim Inkmann graduated with a doctoral degree in economics from the University of Konstanz in 2000. Afterwards, he worked as a Consultant for Siemens Financial Services in Munich. Before joining the University of Melbourne in September 2009, he held academic appointments at the London School of Economics and at Tilburg University. He has published in the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Risk and Insurance and Economica, among others.
