The Isaac Industrial Relations Symposium 2016

02:30 pm - 04:00 pm

Management & Marketing Public Lecture

The Melbourne Human Resource Management Unit (MHRMU) at the University of Melbourne, and the Australian Consortium for Research on Employment and Work (ACREW) from the Centre for Global Business, Monash Business School invite you to attend:

"Ageing Workers: Challenges for Employment Relations and Labor Law" - In honour of Emeritus Professor Joe Isaac AO, FASSA

Professor Mia Rönnmar, Lund University Sweden
Dean and Professor of Private Law

Mia Rönnmar specializes in Swedish, comparative and EU labour law and employment relations, and applies interdisciplinary approaches to labour law research.

Mia is the President-Elect of the International Labour and Employment Relations Association (ILERA), and has conducted expert work for international organizations (e.g. the European Commission and the ILO) and for national governments, authorities and social partners. She has been a visiting researcher at, for example, Sydney Law School, the European University Institute and the London School of Economics.

She is the former Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations and member of editorial boards of several journals in the fields of labour law and industrial relations. Furthermore, she is a member of the Norma Research Programme at Lund University, including its research initiative in Elder Law. Her current research is centred on collective bargaining, elder law and age discrimination.

Summary

Workforce ageing is a major trend in many developed economies due to declining birth rates and rising life expectancy. This demographic development has important implications for economic performance, intergenerational solidarity and social cohesion, and the sustainability of pension and healthcare systems. The ageing of the workforce also poses challenges for employment relations, the social partners, labour law and collective bargaining. There is an urgent need to advance the inclusion of both older and younger workers in the labour market, to promote active ageing and longer and healthier working lives for older workers, and to combat youth unemployment.

This presentation draws on recent comparative research across Australia, the EU, Japan, Latin America, South Africa and the US to highlight the ongoing impact of age-related labor law, collective bargaining rules, and employer practices in the areas of recruitment, working conditions, flexible employment and employment protection.

The presentation will discuss opportunities, challenges and trends in tackling age discrimination, including collective bargaining practices relating to older workers, younger workers and intergenerational solidarity.

About the symposium

This symposium was developed jointly by Monash University and the University of Melbourne to recognise and highlight the outstanding contribution to industrial relations by Emeritus Professor Joe Isaac. Professor Isaac has long been one of Australia’s most distinguished scholars and practitioners in the broad field of industrial relations.

RSVP to reserve your place at this free event: http://tinyurl.com/2016Isaacsymposium Refreshments will be served following the presentation with an opportunity for networking.

During the reception you will have the chance to purchase new book Industrial Relations Reform: Looking to the future.  Essays in honour of Joseph Ezra Isaac AO. Edited by Keith Hancock and Russell D Lansbury.  This book critically analyses recent changes in work and employment relations and their policy implications for Australia.  Scholarly essays by prominent experts in the field examine the lessons that can be learned from previous attempts to reform industrial relations by governments with different political agendas and challenges which may lie ahead.

The 77th CPA Australia-University of Melbourne Annual Research Lecture

Leading Indicators of Organizational Outcomes

05:45 pm - 07:30 pm

Accounting Public Lecture

Leading Indicators of Organizational Outcomes

Professor Shane Dikolli will  deliver the 77th CPA Australia - University of Melbourne Annual Research Lecture.

Shane will explore how recent innovations in accounting research such as executive compensation, audit fees, and corporate culture, have yielded several data sources and methods for generating leading indicators of organizational outcomes. In particular, Shane will discuss leading indicator implications of data sources such as social media preferences; the mandatory expanded disclosure of executive compensation details; the voice recording, written language and speaking style of executives; and the variation in the level of an organization’s audit fees not explained by observable economic factors.

About Professor Shane Dikolli

Shane Dikolli is an Associate Dean for Faculty Engagement at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a Fellow of CPA Australia. He holds a PhD in Accountancy from the University of Waterloo and completed with Distinction both a Post Graduate Diploma in Business (Accounting) and and a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) at Curtin University of Technology. His primary research interests focus on the performance evaluation of CEOs spanning both analytical modeling and empirical analysis. Shane is an Editor at Journal of Management Accounting Research and currently also holds Editorial Board memberships at The Accounting Review, Accounting Organizations and Society, Contemporary Accounting Research, European Accounting Review, Management Accounting Research, and Accounting and Finance. He has published research in Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting & Economics, The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Review of Accounting Studies, European Accounting Review, and Journal of Management Accounting Research. He has received awards for Notable Contribution to the Management Accounting Literature, Best Paper in the Journal of Management Accounting Research (twice), and the Glen McLaughlin Prize for Research in Accounting Ethics. In 2011 Bloomberg Businessweek recognized him in the Top 5 Most Popular Business Professors across all disciplines in the Top 30 business schools in the US. At the Fuqua School of Business Shane has won the “Teacher of the Year” Award seven times across the Fulltime and Weekend Executive MBA programs

Refreshments will be served after the lecture.
