Economics has been taught at The University of Melbourne since 1855. Our core teaching and research areas include economics, econometrics and actuarial studies.
We have built an enviable reputation for research excellence, upholding our position as the premier research department in Australia. Our inspiring teachers are regularly called upon to provide expert opinions to business and government in Australia and around the world.
Our central mission is to provide research, teaching and knowledge transfer of the highest international standard. We are proud of our tradition of high-quality teaching and research, and of the calibre of both our students and academic staff.

- To be regarded as one of the top 25 Economics Departments internationally
- To be recognised as the leading Department in Australia for contributions to knowledge on the operation of the Australian economy and economic policy.
At the postgraduate level, economics programs are offered through the Melbourne Business School
The Department of Economics offers a world-class Doctoral program involving substantial coursework and research. The Economics doctoral program is the only program of its kind in Australia.
