Dean Newlan

Dean is a Partner of McGrathNicol Forensic specialising in fraud risk management and investigations. He joined McGrathNicol in January 2006 after leading KPMGs Melbourne Forensic practice for 11 years. A Certified Practising Accountant and former member of the Victoria Police with more than 20 years of forensic experience, Dean has led a broad range of forensic engagements in Australia and overseas involving fraud, misconduct, corruption and other forms of inappropriate behaviour in business. He has also led various dispute advisory engagements including the quantification of loss in commercial disputes and has acted on a number of occasions in an expert witness capacity.

Dean has a particular interest in fraud and corruption control and chaired the Standards Australia working party that developed Australia's first Fraud and Corruption Control Standard (AS 8001-2003) and chaired the working party that revised AS 8001 which was reissued as AS 8001-2008 in March 2008. He has been an active member of the governance advisory committee of Standards Australia since 2002. He has given evidence on two occasions to parliamentary committees of enquiry in relation to fraud and corruption control related issues.

Dean lectures in Forensic Accounting at under-graduate and post-graduate level at the University of Melbourne. He is a foundation member of the Australian Institute of Professional Investigators of which he is immediate past president and currently Victorian Chapter President. He is chairman of the audit committee of the Municipal Association of Victoria and has been a member of that committee for a period of five years.
